A Leader's Guide to Improving School Climate through Implementing the Fairness Committee. A Manual for Students and Teachers--(A Community Approach to Resolving Grievances).
Fenton, Edwin; Wasserman, Elsa R.
A fairness committee consists of a group of about 15 people, usually students, teachers, and administrators, who are either volunteers or are elected. This committee tries to improve the overall school climate by improving the quality of relationships between students, teachers, and administrators. It offers a neutral place for individuals to bring complaints of unfair treatment and proposes resolutions to conflicts. It also trains students in conflict negotiation and advocacy skills. This participant's manual grew out of nine years of experience with various forms of fairness committees in a variety of schools, beginning with Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (Massachusetts). The manual consists of two major parts: (1) a teaching guide for leaders of fairness committee training workshops for students and teachers; and (2) a workbook text for workshop participants. Each part is divided into 15 sections for use in 5 meetings, each consisting of 3 sessions. Major topics covered in these meetings include: understanding the term "fairness," developing interviewing and listening skills, defining the parameters of a fairness committee, reviewing examples of previous fairness cases, and making plans to establish a fairness committee in the participants' schools.
