Nuclear Power: Pros and Cons. What We Make. Science and Technology Education in Philippine Society.
Philippines Univ., Quezon City. Inst. for Science and Mathematics Education Development.
This module brings together in a panel discussion opposing views and supporting data on the first Philippine nuclear power plant in Morong, Bataan. It extends the discussion of issues and ideas about nuclear power in the dialogue "Go Nuclear" (which should be read before starting this panel discussion). The module deals with the environmental, health, technical, geographic, social, economic, and political aspects of the nuclear power plant. Views of an environmentalist, student, professor, and experts on nuclear plant operations and monitoring are presented. The pros and cons are discussed under each of the following headings: (1) environmental and health impact; (2) safety of plant design; (3) characteristics of plant location; (4) waste control and management; and (5) economic and political implications. Brief comments for the student and for the teacher are provided. The material in the module is recommended for college students in a physics course or a science class looking at the influence of science and technology on society. (JN)
