This course, one of 16 sequential courses comprising phase one of a part-time Bachelor of Arts degree program in Australian Studies, traces a number of 19th and 20th century debates about culture and examines both the ways in which cultural groups have been formed and the conditions under which culture is produced in contemporary society. It is designed for independent study combined with tutorial sessions. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the course and its study objectives. Chapter 2 defines the term "culture" in terms of contemporary usage. Chapter 3 traces the development of the idea of culture and Chapter 4 uses the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as an example of a cultural organization. Chapter 5, "Cultural Changes, 1870-1914" deals with the impact of cultural change. Chapter 6 focuses on cultural production, Chapter 7 presents a model of cultural production, and Chapter 8 considers the debate about mass culture. Chapters 9 and 10 are "The Frankfurt School and the Culture Industry" and "The Concept of Ideology." Tutorial sessions deal with cultural formations, cultural production, and ideology.
