Strawitz, Barbara M.; Malone, Mark R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
Determined whether the field experience component of an undergraduate science methods course influenced teachers' concerns and attitudes toward science and science teaching. Age, grade-point average, openmindedness, and school assignment were examined as variables which might explain some of the variance in the dependent measures. (Author/JN)

Lawrenz, Frances – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1985
Determined: (1) if elementary education majors (N=91) from different levels of reasoning ability learned more science concepts under different grouping methods in an inquiry/learning cycle-based physical science class; and (2) if these students became able to reason more effectively under the different grouping methods. (JN)

Kimmel, Howard; Tomkins, Reginald P. T. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Inservice workshops were conducted to help elementary teachers (self-contained and subject specialists) understand energy issues. Information/background, sources of materials/activities, experiments/demonstrations, and evaluation are discussed. One important aspect of the project was the local utilities' involvement in the workshops. (DH)

Cohen, Sophia – Lawrence Erlbaum Associates (Bks), 2004
This book illustrates the experiences of elementary school teachers across one year's time as they participated in a teacher development seminar focused on mathematics, and as a result changed their beliefs, their knowledge, and their practices. It explores these experiences as a means of understanding the learning that takes a teacher from a more…

Rech, Janice; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1993
This study compared the mathematical competencies and attitudes of elementary education majors (n=171) to a representative college population. Results indicated that elementary education majors possessed more negative attitudes toward mathematics and scored lower in 9 of 10 competency categories than the general college population. Significant…

MacDonald, Ann – British Educational Research Journal, 2004
Collegiality was cited in the post-McCrone Agreement as a vital quality for a professional teaching force in Scotland in the twenty-first century. The Agreement directed schools to henceforth operate more collegially and it was anticipated that this recommendation, alongside the new two-tier promotion system, would facilitate the transformation of…

Brophy, Jere; VanSledright, Bruce A. – 1993
This report presents detailed summaries of the responses of seven exemplary elementary teachers to a series of open-ended questions about effective social studies curriculum and instruction. The questions addressed the teachers' opinions about elementary social studies purposes and goals, content selection, and representation modes; forms and…

Gressard, Clarice P.; Loyd, Brenda H. – 1985
The Computer Attitude Scale (CAS) is a Likert-type instrument consisting of 30 items which present positively and negatively worded statements of attitudes toward computers and the use of computers. The CAS was subjected to three validation studies. The first study examined the reliability and factorial validity of the CAS and its subscales. The…

Alexander, Livingston; And Others – 1983
The purpose of this study was to determine if definitive factors emerge from the responses of teachers to the Teaching Events Stress Inventory (TESI). In a series of three studies during the years 1980 to 1982, data were collected to assess the levels and sources of stress experienced by 660 teachers in central and western Kentucky. The subjects…

Hart, Silvia S.; And Others – 1985
Little is known about how teachers encourage memory activity and strategy use in children. In order to gain such information, 69 teachers of grades K through 6 were observed in five 30-minute periods. A total of 292 strategy suggestions and 15 instances in which the teacher attempted to suppress spontaneous strategy use were observed. Teachers…

Leinhardt, Gaea; And Others – 1984
The objectives of this research were: (a) to identify the content and configuration of critical activity structures and routines in well-functioning classrooms; (b) to trace the origins of routines during the first four days of school; and (c) to identify the mechanisms used by expert teachers to teach students the content, the cues, and the…

Wood, Mary M.; And Others – Journal of Educational Technology Systems, 1986
Describes the field evaluation process used to assess the validity, effectiveness, and efficiency of an interactive microcomputer simulation program designed for teachers and student teachers preparing to work with emotionally or behaviorally handicapped elementary school-age children. Results indicate the simulation was judged to be useful. (MBR)

Bush, William S. – School Science and Mathematics, 1989
Examines teacher mathematics anxiety as it relates to changes in student mathematics anxiety and achievement, teaching practices, and teacher characteristics. The Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale was used for 31 teachers. Teacher mathematics anxiety correlated positively with whole-class instruction time and negatively with the number of students'…

Koballa, Thomas R., Jr. – Science Education, 1989
The purpose of this developmental study was to use the theory of reasoned action to construct a message to persuade elementary teachers to teach energy conservation practices to children. The six steps followed in the project are discussed. An energy conservation persuasive message and the results of the validation are provided. (YP)

Haury, David L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Examines the relationship between science locus of control (SciLOC) orientation and attitudes toward teaching science among 104 preservice elementary school teachers. Path analysis of the proposed causal model accounts for 57 percent of the variance in expressed attitudes and 11 percent of the variance in SciLOC orientation. (Author/YP)
