Somerville, Susan C.; Bryant, P. E. – Child Development, 1985
To test their skill with spatial relationships, 4- to 6-year-olds were given problems in which they had to decide which one of an array of points was in line with two coordinate markers. Results establish that young children's grasp of Euclidean spatial relationships is more adequate than has been suggested. (Author/BE)

Halford, Graeme S.; Kelly, Mavis E. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1984
Presents evidence relevant to three models of the way young children perform N-term series tasks: the labeling model, the sequential-contiguity model, and the ordered array or image model. Reexamines children's ability to learn sets of premises which can be assembled into an ordered array. Participating were children three to seven years of age.

Hartup, Willard W.; And Others – Child Development, 1988
Compared conflicts between 53 children (median age four years, three months) and their friends to conflicts between nonfriends. In comparison with conflicts among friends, conflicts between neutral associates were no less frequent, were less intense, were resolved more frequently with disengagement, and more frequently resulted in equal outcomes.…

Choate-Summers, Molly L.; Freeman, Jennifer B.; Garcia, Abbe M.; Coyne, Lisa; Przeworski, Amy; Leonard, Henrietta L. – Education and Treatment of Children, 2008
Research on the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy, and in particular, exposure with response prevention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), has only been systematically evaluated in children and adolescents ages 7-17. These treatments do not address the unique characteristics of young children with OCD. This paper discusses…

Ebbeck, Marjory; Russo, Sharon – Australian Journal of Early Childhood, 2007
Strategies for becoming global in orientation are now embedded in the policies and practices of most universities in Australia. Such policies, if implemented effectively, contribute to the university's international profile. With this thrust come the implementation of so-called "transnational" programs--that is, the offering of a…

Konstantareas, M. Mary; Homatidis, Soula – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1987
Evaluation of the frequency of ear infections, ear tube drainage, and deafness for 51 autistic children (ages 2-18) indicated that autistic children had a greater incidence of ear infections than matched normal peers and lower functioning children had an earlier onset of ear infections than higher functioning autistic peers. (Author)

Bernheimer, Lucinda P.; Keogh, Barbara K. – American Journal of Mental Retardation, 1988
A prospective longitudinal study of the development of children with delays of unknown etiology over a six-year period (from mean age 34.2 months to 109.7 months) indicated that, for the group as a whole, scores were stable with the most able children at entry making the most progress over time. (DB)
Descriptors: Children, Developmental Disabilities, Longitudinal Studies, Scores

Sodian, Beate – Child Development, 1988
Young children's understanding of the effects of ambiguous and informative messages on a listener's knowledge is studied in two experiments. (PCB)
Descriptors: Child Development, Comprehension, Epistemology, Verbal Communication

Wimmer, Heinz; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1985
Reports study of 4- and 5-year-old children, finding (a) that young children's moral intuition about lying is quite advanced as compared to their definition of "to lie" and (b) that children's realist definition of "to lie" carries a strong negative moral connotation that overrides their usual subjectivist moral intuitions.…

Silverman, Irwin W.; And Others – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1984
Two studies tested young children to determine whether their collections of geometric figures would have graphic properties. A majority of three-year-olds constructed graphic collections, whereas five- and seven-year-olds constructed predominantly nongraphic collections. Increasing the number of dimensions on which the stimuli varied did not have…

Golbeck, Susan L. – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1985
Examines memory for room-sized spatial arrangement in relation to spatial and classification operations. Sixty first-grade children were given two Piagetian spatial tasks and a two-dimensional point duplication problem. Results of multiple regression showed that Euclidean knowledge (measured by verticality) and age in months predicted memory for…

Ostry, David J.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1984
Pulsed ultrasound was used to study tongue movements in the speech of children from 3 to 11 years of age. Speech data attained were characteristic of systems that can be described by second-order differential equations. Relationships observed in these systems may indicate that speech control involves tonic and phasic muscle inputs. (Author/RH)

Kysela, Gerard M.; And Others – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1990
The study assessed the turntaking skills and pragmatic language skills of 4 mildly to moderately developmentally delayed children (ages 2 and 3) and 14 nondelayed controls. Developmentally delayed children exhibited appropriate turntaking skills but a higher proportion of gestural in contrast to verbal responses to the pragmatic language tasks.…

Watkins, Ruth V.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1995
This study evaluated the extent to which measures of lexical diversity (type-token ratio and number of different words produced) differentiated 25 children (mean age 59 months) with specific language impairment (SLI) from typical children. Analysis of utterance samples revealed that SLI children did not differ on type-token ratio but did use…
