Kotz, Kasey M.; Watkins, Marley W.; McDermott, Paul A. – School Psychology Review, 2008
Some researchers have argued that discrepant broad index scores invalidate IQs, but others have questioned the fundamental logic of that argument. To resolve this debate, the present study used a nationally representative sample of children (N = 1,200) who were matched individually for IQ. Children with significantly uneven broad index score…

Topping, K. J.; Samuels, J.; Paul, T. – British Educational Research Journal, 2008
To explore whether different balances of fiction/non-fiction reading and challenge might help explain differences in reading achievement between genders, data on 45,670 pupils who independently read over 3 million books were analysed. Moderate (rather than high or low) levels of challenge were positively associated with achievement gain, but…

Topping, K. J.; Samuels, J.; Paul, T. – School Effectiveness and School Improvement, 2007
This study elaborates the "what works?" question by exploring the effects of variability in program implementation quality on achievement. Bohannon, John Neil, III; And Others – Child Development, 1984
Reports two studies which found a relationship between awareness of word order in sentences and reading readiness and achievement for children in kindergarten through third grade. Suggests this type of metalinguistic awareness may be important to early reading because it helps children to detect meaningful relationships between words. (Author/CB)

Alarcon, Marciela; DeFries, John C.; Light, Jacquelyn Gillis; Pennington, Bruce F. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1997
Comparison of twins (40 identical and 23 fraternal) for mathematics deficits (MD), in which at least one member had a mathematics disability, found evidence for a significant genetic etiology. However, tests for the differential etiology of MD as a function of reading performance level were nonsignificant. (Author/DB)

Two studies compared intelligence quotient, reading achievement test results, and spelling errors in 57 adult dyslexics, 56 adult nondyslexics, and 25 adult compensated dyslexics. Results suggest that compensated dyslexics appear very similar to nondyslexics in their reading and spelling skills; however, there is a difference in the automaticity…
