In this chapter, the authors explore the effect of incentives on attrition and nonresponse in a multi-institutional longitudinal study. They organize this chapter into three sections. First, they review the literature regarding nonresponse among students and the effects of incentives on attrition and nonresponse in studies that employ cross-sectional and longitudinal research designs. Next, they present an example by exploring trends of attrition across cohorts and incentive types using lessons learned from the Wabash Study of Liberal Arts Education (the Wabash Study). Finally, they offer implications for practice for campus institutional researchers for offering incentives and reducing attrition in survey research. (Contains 1 table.)
