Institutional Efforts to Move Seniors through and beyond College
Henscheid, Jean M.
New Directions for Higher Education, n144 p79-87 Win 2008
The portrait of the American college senior is a mix of economic pressures and shifting choices. Understanding that the senior year represents another critical transition point for college students, many U.S. colleges and universities are taking intentional steps to help students bring closure to their collegiate experience and accomplish the final undergraduate transition successfully. In this article, the author considers the senior experience in its entirety, beginning with definitions of the senior year and the senior year experience (SYE), data on who among American students makes it to the final year, what the majority of them are studying, how much debt they are leaving with, and the overall advantages of a college education. She then revisits the curricular landscape of the senior year with a summary of findings from a national survey on senior seminars and capstone courses, and she provides examples of senior year programs found in American colleges and universities. The article ends with recommendations for practitioners on enhancing and integrating all components of the senior experience and for researchers on ways to broaden understanding about this experience.
