Campus Trends, 1990. Higher Education Panel Report Number 80.
El-Khawas, Elaine
The monograph reports the results of a survey of senior administrators at 364 colleges and universities to identify trends and changes taking place in academic and administrative practices. Special attention was given to college and university faculty due to significant shortages predicted for the next decade in this labor market. The structure of today's undergraduate curriculum was also examined, as well as descriptions gains in minority faculty hirings, physical facility growth problems, and interest in "locally developed" methods of assessing student learning. Among major findings were: more than 6 in 10 respondents reported a net gain in the number of their full-time faculty; 82% of institutions have some form of assessment activity currently under way; 55% of institutions increased their enrollment of first-time freshmen in 1989-90; and issues of adequate financial support outweighed all other problems, being cited by 65% of administrators. Findings are presented in six sections: faculty, curriculum, enrollment, assessment activity, institutional status, and challenges ahead. Detailed tables, showing results by type of institution, follow the text. For many of the survey's questions, comparisons with previous survey results are included. Contains 13 references. (GLR)
