Disability Needs Assessment of SUNY Campuses.
Friedman, Sally; And Others
State University of New York (SUNY) faculty, professionals, and librarians who have disabilities were surveyed to determine whether a fund should be established to facilitate the hiring of, and provision of accommodations for, people with disabilities in the SUNY system. The researchers interviewed 25 employees with disabilities at 7 representative campuses in addition to mailing questionnaires to the 504 coordinators of the SUNY campuses represented by the United University Professions. There were estimated to be fewer SUNY employees with disabilities than might have been expected. There was a wide range of types and severity of disability and these variations have led to concomitant variations in needs and accommodations. A need for information about the rights of people with disabilities, about adaptive technology, and about campus-provided services was found, as well as a need for an institutional commitment to the improvement of conditions for currently employed people with disabilities and to the hiring of more such people. The report concludes with recommendations for a matching fund to be monitored over a 3-year period, publicity for the fund, and a top-down commitment of New York State and the UUP to disability issues. The study instrument is appended. Contains 41 references. (GLR)
