The California State Department of Education collects racial and ethnic data on public school staff and students in California in October of each year through the California Basic Educational Data System (CBEDS). This report presents a summary of the data for the State and for each county. The following characteristics are noted: (1) of the 4.5 million students enrolled in the public schools, 49.9 percent were members of minority groups; (2) of those students enrolled in kindergarten through grade 9, over 50 percent were minority students and of those students enrolled in grades 10 through 12, 45 percent were minority students; (3) white students accounted for 61.1 percent of the high school graduates in 1987; (4) white certified staff members accounted for 81.6 percent of the total certified staff; and (5) the total number of full-time and part-time classified staff members was 216,412 and 38.6 percent of them were members of minority groups.
