Designed to serve as an introduction to instructional development for the teacher or graduate student who has not read extensively in the field, this chapter presents an operational definition of the instructional development process; explores the human dimensions of the process; provides graphic models of instructional development; and makes practical suggestions for implementing and diffusing instructional development. Three models of instructional development--two by Hamreus and one by Glaser--are used to illustrate: (1) the nature of instructional development; (2) the steps in the instructional development process; (3) the human aspects of instructional development; (4) the diffusion of instructional development; and (5) where instructional development fits into educational technology and the public view of education. The text is supplemented with three figures, and a 24-item bibliography is provided. (Author/EW)
