NAIS Member School Operations, 1985-86; NAIS Membership, 1986-87. NAIS Statistics, Spring 1987.
National Association of Independent Schools, Boston, MA.
This report is compiled from information provided by National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) member schools in a 1986 survey of student and staff counts and financial operations. The first section summarizes survey results from 1982-83 to 1986-87 on enrollment and number of member schools, financial aid, and financial operations data in average dollars per student. Of the country's approximately 110,000 elementary and secondary schools, it is estimated that about 1,700 are independent schools; half are NAIS members surveyed in this report. Detailed data on member schools' enrollments are presented in section 2, including day and boarding enrollments by region, 1985-86 and 1986-87, grade enrollments, 1985-86 and 1986-87, number of schools by school type, grade level category, and student type, 1982-83 to 1986-87, and enrollment by school type, grade level, student type and day/boarding category, 1982-83 to 1986-87. The personnel count and median student-teacher ratios for 1986-87 are reported in section 3. Section 4 details enrollments and percentages of minority students and staff, including percentages of minority student enrollment by racial/ethnic group, minority students in Hawaiian and territorial schools in 1986-87, and minority teachers by racial/ethnic group and by school type. Financial aid data for 1985-86 are presented in section 5 in terms of school type, income sources, and aid to faculty, staff children, and minority children. The final section provides information on financial operations in 1985-86 for girls' schools, boys' schools, and coeducational schools. The report offers 25 tables of data, a glossary, and technical notes on survey sources and methods. (CJH)
