A National Survey of Higher Education Media Services.
McConeghy, Gary L.; McConeghy, Janet I.
A questionnaire was distributed to 486 two- and four-year colleges and universities with an enrollment of at least 1,000 students in order to determine the extent to which campus media service units were providing nonprint media services to their students and faculty. Administration, distribution services, maintenance services, video production services, and other production services were the major areas covered by the questionnaire. Analysis of the 220 responses received (a 45% response rate) indicated that: (1) the average total non-print media budget was $227,113, and the national average expenditure per student for media service was $38.71; (2) 60% of all schools did their own hardware repairs; (3) 75% of the respondents indicated that they produced video materials for campus users; (4) indicators of growth, such as increases in staff and maintenance or production activities, were evident in a majority of the schools; and (5) increasing use of media services was also reported. Seventeen tables are distributed throughout the paper. A list of the responding institutions and a copy of the questionnaire are appended, and four references are listed. (Author/MES)
