University Library Experience with Remote Access to Online Catalogs.
Jamieson, Alexis J.; Dolan, M. Elizabeth
To investigate the experience of American and Canadian university libraries with remote access catalogs, self-administered questionnaires were sent to the 137 directors of all Association of Research Libraries (ARL) libraries and all libraries of Canadian degree-granting institutions. The study was designed to: (1) survey Canadian and U.S. academic libraries which allow remote access to their online catalogs or online catalog substitutes; (2) discover changes in library use patterns and library service demands by remote access terminal/personal computer users; and (3) determine the number of users and whether this has changed over time. The questionnaire was made up of 20 questions covering such aspects of remote access as the number of patrons who can log-on at the same time, the hours of service, time limitations on individual use, patron demand for additional service, and changes in level of patron satisfaction with the service already provided. This report describes remote access facilities and services at the early stage of their development, and also indicates some of the problems in collecting data. The questionnaire and a number of tables are appended. (THC)
