Zeidler, Dana Lewis – 1984
Measurements of formal reasoning and principled moral reasoning ability were obtained from a sample of 99 tenth grade students. Specific modes of formal reasoning (proportional reasoning, controlling variables, probabilistic, correlational and combinatorial reasoning) were first examined. Findings support the notion of hierarchical relationships…

Amigues, Rene – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1988
Evaluated the effects of the processes of working alone and of working in pairs on 10th-grade students' performance of tasks involving comprehension and production of electrical diagrams. Sociocognitive interaction had positive effects on students' individual performances, and peer interaction favored the implementation of metacognitive…

Bateson, David J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1990
The effects of full-credit semester and all-year timetables on science attitudes and science achievement of grade 10 students was investigated. Findings indicated that students in all-year courses consistently outperformed students in semester courses in the cognitive domain, but there were no differences in the affective domain. (CW)

Lederman, Norman G. – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
High school biology teachers (N=18), and one 10th-grade class of each teacher, were given the Nature of Scientific Knowledge Scale at the beginning and end of a school year to determine their conceptions of the nature of science. Results (such as students not possessing "adequate" conceptions of science) are reported and discussed. (JN)

Johsua, Samuel; Dupin, Jean-Jacques – International Journal of Science Education, 1991
French tenth grade physics classes were observed as they studied electric circuits over a one-year period. An analysis is presented of tests taken during the year. The main point separating "average" students from "good" ones is their performances in "implicitly difficult exercises," that is, in what appears…

Dreyfus, Amos; And Others – Science Education, 1990
Discussed are the implications of the three main stages of conceptual change--"awareness, disequilibrium, and reformulating"--on misconceptions of grade 10 students in Israel. The difficulties and problems encountered with the procedure are included. (KR)

Westbrook, Susan L.; And Others – 1990
Much of the focus in science education has been on the theoretical constructs and practical implications of conceptual change. History of science, cognitive theory, and alternative conceptions have been used as backdrops for the study of the child's conceptual movement away from naive beliefs about scientific phenomena. In this study, conceptual…

Piburn, Michael D.; Baker, Dale R. – 1988
While logical reasoning skills are related to success in science, the relationship between thought and formal logic is not clear. Propositional Logic Test (PLT), error patterns of students' interpretations of logical proposition, and developmental patterns of the error type are described. Examined is the relationship between logical reasoning…

Miller, Jon D. – 1988
The context of socialization in the second half of the 20th century is far different than any previous socialization environment. Children in the United States and in other industrialized countries grow to adulthood in an age of science and technology. Despite these changes in the socialization environment, there has been little systematic study…

Barba, Robertta H.; Merchant, Linda J. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1990
Discussed is whether embedding generative cognitive strategies in microcomputer courseware improves student performance on cognitive assessment measures and on insect classification tasks. The effects of transactional software on students' knowledge of insect anatomy and principles of insect classification were also investigated. (KR)

Khoury, Ghada A.; Voss, Burton E. – 1985
This study was designed, using a path analytic model, to assess the relative impact of different factors on science concentration decisions made by grade 10 high school students (N=237). Included in the model were selected demographic and socioeconomic factors, academic abilities factors (including logical thinking), indicators of home and school…

Bridgeman, Dorothy J.; And Others – 1985
This study examined the characteristics of family environment and its relationship to attitudes toward science. Data were collected from over 800 seventh-grade and over 1,400 tenth-grade students during a longitudinal, multi-dimensional study of the relationship between the variables of home, school, and self as related to attitudes toward and…

Stuessy, Carol L.; Rowland, Paul McD. – 1989
Locus of control, a generalized belief about causality in one's personal life, was identified as a potential variable impinging upon the acquisition of science-related attitudes in classes of high school students from 10th grade biology, and 11th and 12th grade chemistry, and of college elementary education majors. Correlations of the…

Tirosh, Dina; Stavy, Ruth – School Science and Mathematics, 1992
Reports a study to examine secondary school students' (n=200) responses to two figurally and spatially similar problems from mathematics and science that require different responses before and after instruction. Results indicated that most students gave the same response to both questions. Reasons for this pattern are discussed. (MDH)

Gunstone, Richard F. – 1988
One of the clear findings of recent research on the learning of science has been that students who have completed science courses commonly use conceptions held before instruction to interpret natural phenomena. This paper reports on a study of conceptual change in mechanics with particular concern with the nature of student awareness of any…
