Blumenthal, Terry D.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1987
Results suggest that temporal summation of brief stimuli is deficient in neonates. When compared with adult data from an analogous study, results also suggest that the transient system is immature in infants and that this immaturity is expressed in different ways by startle amplitude, probability, and latency. (PCB)

Hornik, Robin; And Others – Child Development, 1987
Studied were the responses of infants to new toys presented with either positive, negative, or neutral affective displays by mothers. Responses to stimulus toys were compared with responses to free play toys. Maternal displays influenced responses only to stimulus toys. (PCB)

Sheppard, Justine Joan; Mysak, Edward D. – Child Development, 1984
To document movement patterns and to examine developmental interrelationships, the ontogeny of rooting, lip, lateral tongue, mouth opening, biting, and Babkin reflexes and the development of emerging chewing behaviors were observed in two normal infants over a period from 1 week to 35 weeks of age. (Author/RH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Behavior Development, Infant Behavior, Infants

Porter, Fran Lang; And Others – Child Development, 1986
Investigates the relation between neonatal cry features elicited by painful circumcision procedures and the perceived urgency of those cries. (HOD)
Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Auditory Perception, Infant Behavior, Infants

Schultz, Ned W.; Carson, David K. – Child Study Journal, 1986
Examines the extent to which an infant's social initiative resists or is modified by three variations in the behavior of adult responsiveness: repeated responses, varied responses, and eye aversion. (HOD)
Descriptors: Behavior Development, Infant Behavior, Nonverbal Communication, Parent Child Relationship

Smith-Gray, Sybil; Koester, Lynne Sanford – American Annals of the Deaf, 1995
This study compared efforts of 20 deaf and 20 hearing infants to reengage their deaf or hearing mothers in a maternal "still-face" situation. When all kinds of infant signal behaviors were considered, few overall differences were found in eliciting efforts by deaf and hearing infants. (Author/DB)
