Food Insecurity and Obesity: A Dual Challenge for Low-Income Families
Parker, Lynn
Zero to Three, v28 n1 p24-30 Sep 2007
"Food insecurity," which is the lack of access to enough food to fully meet basic needs at all times because of economic constraints, afflicts 40.6% of low-income households with children. Research shows that living in a food-insecure household can lead to negative health and developmental consequences for young children, including obesity. Reasons for the association between food insecurity and obesity are not clear but seem to relate, in part, to low-income families' efforts to stave off hunger while coping with limited resources to buy food. Practitioners should be aware of this dual health problem. A major part of the solution to food insecurity and obesity is to provide dependable access to nutritionally adequate foods through federal nutrition programs.
