Sociological Factors Affecting Childhood Obesity
Forster-Scott, Latisha
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v78 n8 p29-30, 47 Oct 2007
According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics, childhood obesity rates are highest among ethnic minorities. It is very helpful to consider the role of culture when attempting to analyze and explain obesity rates in ethnic minority populations. Culture influences the attitudes and beliefs toward exercise, food and nutrition, and body image. It is important for professionals such as teachers, doctors, counselors, and health and fitness educators to be culturally informed, or else they might not be effective in reducing the incidence of obesity in the populations that are most seriously affected. This article discusses a few sociological and cultural factors that professionals need to keep in mind if they are to successfully address obesity among ethnic minorities.
