Providing Guidance for School Personnel Making Decisions in the Service of School Children with Congenital Heart Disease
Roberts, Jillian; MacMath, Sheryl
Exceptionality Education Canada, v16 n2-3 p59-72 2006
Due to improved medical procedures, more and more children with congenital heart disease are entering the school system. In order to help both school and health professionals involved in the education of children, we provide a brief review of the literature, review real-life dilemmas that school personnel face on a daily basis, and interpret the Canadian Psychological Association's Guidelines for Non-Discriminatory Practice to provide guidance in this context. We reflect on these interpretations in light of interviews conducted with school children with congenital heart disease and their parents. The concerns and recommendations of these families suggest the need for the 5 C's of Best Practice: Communication, Confidentiality, Consistency, Competence, and Compassion. We provide specific examples of how the Guidelines for Non-Discriminatory Practice and the 5 C's of Best Practice can inform one another to support more effectively school children and their families.
