Communication Competence: Impact of the Pragmatics Revolution on Education of Hearing Impaired Individuals.
Kretschmer, Richard R., Jr.; Kretschmer, Laura W.
Topics in Language Disorders, v9 n4 p1-16 Sep 1989
Three primary strands of pragmatic theory and research are applied to interpersonal communication research and education of hearing-impaired individuals: communication/speech act theory, conversational organization theory, and text/discourse-building theory. It is concluded that neither current research nor educational practice suggests widespread acceptance of a communication focus in the education of hearing-impaired children. (JDD)
