Non-Resident Residents: But How? Supporting Undocumented Students in Campus Housing
Davidson, Amanda N.; Preciado, Henoc M.
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v43 n3 p92-105 2017
Various state and federal policies and regulations have made higher education more accessible to undocumented students over the past few years. As undocumented students continue to enroll in colleges and universities across the country, higher education professionals must be equipped with knowledge and skills to provide them with equitable experiences and opportunities, such as those provided to their U.S. resident and citizen peers. Research on the lived experiences of undocumented students enrolled in higher education institutions continues to increase, and more research is still needed. The research that exists is telling, and continues to help institutions inform their practices. Missing from the literature, however, is consideration of the experiences of undocumented students within college and university student housing. For this reason, this article is meant to serve as an exploratory piece--one that explores the various ways that undocumented students navigate the college and university environment, with an emphasis placed on the challenges and obstacles they might face in campus housing. This article begins by briefly reviewing the context of the ever-changing policies and regulations that shape the undocumented student experience and applying the current research regarding the unique financial and social challenges undocumented students may face, to experiences of living in housing and residence life. This article concludes by providing recommendations for practitioners to better serve undocumented students who seek to live in college and university housing.
