Teaching with Care: Cultivating Personal Qualities That Make a Difference
Sandel, Lenore, Ed.
International Reading Association (NJ3)
In today's standards-focused environment, a real key to student achievement is often overlooked: teachers' personal qualities. In this collection, respected educators give their views on what it takes to be an outstanding teacher. The essays speak on a personal level, providing novice and experienced teachers with guidance about what it takes to be an excellent educator. Reflection questions at the start of each section will help one relate essay topics to one's own practice. "Teaching with Care" provides reaffirmation for the experienced, inspiration for the beginner, and reflective renewal for all. Following a foreword by Carl Smith and a preface by Lenore Sandel, this book is divided into four major sections. Section I, Getting Started, introduces: (1) Vision (Keith C. Barton); (2) Passion (Terry L. Murphy); (3) Energy; (Ellen H. Katz); (4) Theory (Jerome C. Harste); (5) Curiosity (Patricia O. Richards); and (6) Wonder (Karen M. Landsman). Section II, Meeting Your Students, continues with: (7) Respect (Lilian G. Katz); (8) Cultural Sensitivity (Lynne T. Diaz-Rico); (9) Partnership (Harvey Alpert); (10) Trust (Mary M. Kitagawa); (11) Self-Expression (Bernice E. Cullinan); (12) Imagination (Kieran Egan); (13) Love (Wayne B. Jennings); (14) Empathy (Karen F. Osterman); and (15) Caring (Nancy Parks Bertrand). Section III, The Heart of Teaching and Learning, includes: (16) Performance (J. Dan Marshall); (17) Connectivity (John R. McIntyre); (18) Inquiry (Beth Berghoff); (19) Spirituality (Susan A. Schiller); (20) Modeling (Rhonda Clements); (21) Subversion (Lynda Stone); (22) Guiding (Judith A. Sykes); (23) Listening (David E. Ludlam); (24) Kidwatching (Yetta M. Goodman); and (25) Adaptiveness (Lyn Corno). Section IV, At Day's End, concludes the book with: (26) Persistence (Hugh Thomas McCracken); (27) Support (Michael P. Wolfe); (28) Self-Knowledge (Gregory A. Smith); (29) Hope (Ruth D. Farrar); and (30) Reflection (Thomas R. Hoerr).
