Managing Change with Infants and Young Children. Research in Practice Series. Volume 13, Number 2
Linke, Pam
Early Childhood Australia
The Research in Practice Series is published four times each year by Early Childhood Australia. The series aims to provide practical, easy to read, up-to-date information and support to a growing national readership of early childhood workers. The books bring together the best information available on wide-ranging topics and are an ideal resource for children's services workers and others interested in the care and education of young children. To young children, everything is new; but some changes are more difficult for them than others. How can we assist young children to cope with the enormous changes they will encounter in their lives? In this document, the author outlines what carers can do to help to make infants' and young children's early experiences of change as stress-free as possible. Positive action in the early years sets the foundation for all the future changes that children will experience; and children usually cope well with change and transition when they are in the care of adults who are sensitive and responsive. This book shows how carers can encourage infants and young children to manage change--an approach that will help them for the rest of their lives. Following an introduction, it is divided into the following chapters: (1) What Changes Are Stressful?; (2) Signals of Stress; (3) Helping Children with Changes and Transitions; (4) What If Children Are Not Coping and Seem Unable to Move Forward?; and (5) Change and Trauma. The book concludes with a summary, a listing of references and resources. [This document was produced by Early Childhood Australia Inc., formerly known as the Australian Early Childhood Association.]
