Citizenship education is now part of the United Kingdom's National Curriculum, and teachers across the country are working to make it a daily reality in schools. The purpose of this book is to show how education for active citizenship gives schools greater prominence as centers of social and civic renewal. Part 1 explores what citizenship education is about. Part 2 explores reasons why citizenship education has come about, including falling turnout at the polls, the condition of young people today, and crime. Part 3 was written chiefly for practitioners and participants, particularly for those who are responsible for planning, implementing, and promoting the citizenship agenda. Part 4 explores key themes that link citizenship education to social, political, and community development. Point-by-point advice is illustrated by national case studies and experiences, covering a wide range of issues including peer learning, community service, environmental work, and intergenerational projects. This book shows how active citizenship can be fostered to benefit schools, students, and their communities by identifying and meeting real needs as well as the demands of the National Curriculum.
