Strategies for Word Identification: Phonics from a New Perspective.
Fox, Barbara J.
Based on the idea that word identification is a group of strategies that children develop as they learn to read, not a single letter-sound by letter-sound pathway to pronunciation, this book invites teachers to support readers as they develop and use many different world identification strategies. Chapters in the book are: (1) Using the Alphabetic Code Strategically; (2) Becoming Aware of Language: Insights into Print and Phonological Awareness; (3) Early Strategies: Using Pictures, Smudges, and Single Code Cues to Identify Words; (4) The Analogy Strategy: Using Familiar Words to Identify Unfamiliar Words; (5) The Letter-Sound Strategy: Identifying Words by Their Letters and Sounds; (6) The Chunk Strategy: Using Groups of Letters to Identify Words; and (7) Learners Who Need Extra Help. Appendixes present learning activities, materials and techniques for learning activities, words with rhymes, letter neighborhoods, prefixes, suffixes, Greek and Latin roots, definitions, and questions and answers.
