Getting Tenure. Survival Skills for Scholars. Volume 8.
Whicker, Marcia Lynn; And Others
This book is a practical guide to the college faculty tenure process and offers concrete advice on strategies to increase a faculty member's chances of obtaining tenure. Chapter 1 defines tenure and touches on elements of the qualifications, professional regulation, and institutional investment. Chapter 2 urges candidates to actively manage their tenure cases and to realistically acknowledge the political aspect of the process. Chapter 3 discusses the tenure process during the probationary years as an assistant professor. Chapter 4 explores the time immediately before the tenure decision and the actual process by which tenure is decided. Chapter 5 addresses meeting the research criterion, the most difficult for many candidates. The discussion covers the rationale for publishing, collaborative projects, and developing a publication record. Chapter 6 treats the teaching criterion, and chapter 7 explains how to meet the service criterion. Chapter 8 looks at the diversity of paths to tenure particularly the six most common: the super-star path; the on-time, steady producer path; the bounce-around path; the fail-and-try-again path; the late-career practitioner path; and the late-career child rearing path. Chapter 9 offers 10 commandments of tenure success. (Contains 27 references.) (JB)
