The Validity and Reliability of Instruments Used in Identifying Gifted and Talented Students.
Johnsen, Susan K.
This paper rates the technical aspects of 41 tests that match characteristics associated with giftedness, using criteria developed in "A Consumer's Guide to Tests in Print" (Hammill, Brown, Bryant, 1989). A summary of validity studies showing these tests' use in identifying gifted youngsters for special programs is also provided. In this sample of 41 tests, only 32% of the tests meet acceptable standards in the technical area and only 22% report any validity studies with gifted samples. Recommendations are made to professionals involved in the screening and placement of gifted children. Includes 54 references. (Author/PB)
