Learning from the Best: A Profile of America's Finest Vocational Programs Serving People with Disabilities, 1987.
J.M. Foundation, New York, NY.
The monograph describes 11 exemplary programs selected in 1987 by the J. M. (Jeremiah Milbank) Foundation from 154 programs providing vocational services to persons with disabilities. Programs were selected in four categories: community-based work adjustment, consortium-based transition, supported work in small communities, and work services for the severely disabled. Descriptions typically include a comprehensive discussion of the program's history, services, and strengths, as well as illustrations, the name of a contact person, address, and phone number. Also provided for each category is a chart showing how excellence was measured, and median values for programs evaluated. A summary section for each category identifies trends and issues. The programs selected include: Vocational Guidance Services, Cleveland, Ohio; Goodwill Industries of Kentucky, Inc., Louisville, Kentucky; Goodwill Industries of New Jersey, Inc., Harrison, New Jersey; Rural Minnesota Concentrated Employment Program (CEP), Inc., Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; International Center for the Disabled (ICD), New York, New York; Washington County Mental Health Services, Inc., Barre, Vermont; PACE Training and Evaluation Center, Star City, West Virginia; Washington County Vocational Workshop, Nashville, Illinois; Goodwill Industries of Colorado Springs, Inc., Colorado Springs, Colorado; Napa Valley Products, Services, and Industries, Inc., Napa, California; and Pioneer Center for the Exceptional, McHenry, Illinois.
