Thinking about Non-Traditional Careers. An Exploratory Workshop for Teenagers. Final Report from July 1, 1986 to June 30, 1987.
Sarasota County Vocational-Technical Center, Sarasota, FL.
A two-week workshop was organized at which 10th- and 11th-grade girls actively explored for one full day six different nontraditional careers. The careers were auto mechanics, law enforcement, emergency medical technician/paramedic, livestock production, fire science, and hotel management. Shorter sessions were conducted in broadcasting and advertising. Activities covered attitudes, communications, values, interviewing and resume writing, personal interests, decision making, financial planning, and goal setting. By using the workbook "Choices" and the Kuder Preference Record, the participants had the opportunity to examine their personal values, attitudes, interests, and goals. One-third of the girls selected a career that would be explored in a follow-up activity. (Appendixes, amounting to over one-half of the report, include workshop materials such as publicity items, evaluation forms, and workshop schedule.) (YLB)
