THE FOLLOWING IS THE FULL TEXT OF THIS DOCUMENT (Except for the Evaluation Summary Table): VERSION: 3.3. PRODUCER: Hartley Courseware, Inc., Box 431, Dimondale, Michigan 48821. EVALUATION COMPLETED: January 1983 at the North Clackamas School District, Milwaukie, Oregon, and at Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, Portland, Oregon. COST: $32.95. ABILITY LEVEL: Grades 3 through 6. SUBJECT: Language. TOPIC: Parts of Speech. MEDIUM OF TRANSFER: 5-1/4" flexible disk. REQUIRED HARDWARE: Apple II, 48K, 1 disk drive, monitor, printer (optional). REQUIRED SOFTWARE: Applesoft, DOS 3.3 or 3.2. INSTRUCTIONAL PURPOSE: Standard instruction, assessment. INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: Instructional management, authoring, drill and practice, tutorial. DOCUMENTATION AVAILABLE: In program--student's instructions. In supplementary materials--suggested grade/ability level(s), instructional objectives, program operating instructions, and teacher's information. INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: (STATED) To provide drill and practice on recognition of common and proper nouns, possessives; nouns and pronouns; noun plurals; and identification of pronouns and antecedents. The objectives are more precisely stated in the manual. INSTRUCTIONAL PREREQUISITES: (INFERRED) The student should have some prior instruction to the objectives. A student planning option is available to assess the student's progress. CONTENT AND STRUCTURE: The package covers identification of nouns, plural nouns, possessives, identification and use of pronouns and pronoun antecedents. The student is presented with a stimulus and inputs a choice of a, b, or c, or a word. The package includes a record keeping option with printing capability. Also included is a create-a-lesson format. POTENTIAL USES: This package is most appropriately used with individual students for remedial, standard instruction or enrichment. MAJOR STRENGTHS: the presentation of the material is very logical. The program allows for alternate ways of answering the questions and gives immediate feedback. The capability for the teacher to author appropriate materials for students is a real plus! By following directions in the program and reading the documentation carefully, the process is very easy. Modifications to any existing lesson can also be made. The record keeping for students is a strong point in that it tells not only how many were missed, but exactly what was missed. MAJOR WEAKNESSES: The rewards are not particularly exciting, and would seem not to be a motivator in themselves. In places, the screen is somewhat crowded due to the larger lettering. EVALUATION SUMMARY: The evaluators indicated they would use or recommend use of this package with little or no change. (Author)
