Freeland, P. W. – Journal of Biological Education, 1978
Methods are described for the induction and identification of respiratory deficient mutants in yeast. Practical schemes are given to enable students to obtain dose-response information for physical and chemical mutagens such as heat, ultraviolet light, or acriflavine. A simple test for environmental mutagens is described. (Author/MA)
Descriptors: Biology, Instructional Materials, Laboratory Experiments, Learning Activities

Feiro, Arthur D. – American Biology Teacher, 1978
The rhizosphere is the area directly surrounding the roots of a plant and an area of tremendous microbial growth. This article described techniques for studying this soil biome. Illustrations are included. (MA)
Descriptors: Biology, Botany, Instructional Materials, Laboratory Experiments

Sulzinski, Michael A. – Science Teacher, 1992
Explains how the tobacco mosaic virus can be used to study virology. Presents facts about the virus, procedures to handle the virus in the laboratory, and four laboratory exercises involving the viruses' survival under inactivating conditions, dilution end point, filterability, and microscopy. (MDH)
Descriptors: Laboratory Experiments, Microbiology, Plants (Botany), Science Activities

Benathen, Isaiah A. – American Biology Teacher, 1992
Presents a singular alternative to the Indole Methyl-red Voges-Proskauer Citrate (IMViC) test that uses bile-esculin agar to distinguish between the Escherichia coli and Enterobacter aerogenes bacteria. Includes materials and methods, results, and conclusions for the test. (MDH)
Descriptors: Bacteria, Laboratory Experiments, Laboratory Procedures, Microbiology

Swails, Molly – Science Activities, 1980
Described is a science experiment involving the isolation and study of microorganisms. Bacteria from the mouth are cultured on blood agar culture plates and are then exposed to four different mouthwashes to test their effectiveness. (DS)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Junior High School Students, Laboratory Experiments, Microbiology

Blair, Benjie; Bowen, William – American Biology Teacher, 1996
Describes the preparation of a simple microbiological medium using inexpensive materials routinely available in any supermarket. Discusses inoculation of the medium and colony examination. (JRH)
Descriptors: Biology, Higher Education, Microbiology, Science Experiments

Brehm, Michael A.; And Others – American Biology Teacher, 1996
Presents an experiment to compare the effectiveness of 95% ethanol to 20% bleach as disinfectants using t-tests for the statistical analysis of the data. Reports that bleach is a better disinfectant. Discusses the statistical and practical significance of the results. (JRH)
Descriptors: Biology, Higher Education, Microbiology, Science Experiments

Cronholm, Lois S.; Metz, Mildred C. – Nursing Outlook, 1976
Described are two hospital-based laboratory exercises which helped students perceive the relationship between the principles of microbiology and the practice of nursing. The exercises involved an environmental study focusing on problems of nosocomial infection and a study of patients hospitalized with infectious diseases. (Author/MS)
Descriptors: Clinical Experience, Learning Activities, Microbiology, Nursing

Russo, A. J.; And Others – American Biology Teacher, 1984
Background information, list of required materials, and procedures are provided for an immunological assay which has been modified for use as a classroom/laboratory demonstration of antigen-antibody reaction. The assay is designed for a two and one-half hour laboratory period but may be modified for one hour laboratories. (JN)
Descriptors: Biology, College Science, Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures

Pinney, Robert; Kalil, Millicent – American Biology Teacher, 1975
States the procedure for isolating actinomycetes from soil and testing for antibiotic growth. (LS)
Descriptors: Biology, Laboratory Experiments, Microbiology, Science Activities

Rowland, Jane Thomas – American Biology Teacher, 1979
Describes the collection and culturing of microscopic molds that feed mainly on tiny nematodes in the soil. Includes bibliography. (MA)
Descriptors: Biology, Botany, Culturing Techniques, Laboratory Experiments

Foos, K. Michael – American Biology Teacher, 1996
Presents a laboratory demonstration that helps students understand the concept of microscope calibration. (JRH)
Descriptors: Biology, Demonstrations (Science), Higher Education, Instrumentation

Corner, Thomas R. – Science Teacher, 1984
Errors in determining the effectiveness of mouthwashes, disinfectants, and other household products as antibacterial agents may result from using broth cultures and/or irregularly shaped bits of filter paper. Presents procedures for a better technique and, for advanced students, two additional procedures for introducing quantitative analysis into…
Descriptors: Culturing Techniques, Laboratory Procedures, Microbiology, Science Education

McDermott, J. – Journal of Biological Education, 1985
Describes a computer program that students use to check their suggestions of possible lines of investigation during a microbiology exercise, the results of procedures, and the decisions made on the basis of experimental evidence. Effectiveness of the program and practical aspects of the investigation are considered. (DH)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Software, Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures

Barkman, Susan J. – Science Teacher, 1996
Presents food science experiments designed for high school science classes that aim at getting students excited about science and providing them with real-life applications. Enables students to see the application of chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and other basic and applied sciences to the production, processing, preservation, evaluation,…
