ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Freed-Hardeman University
Instructional leaders are vital to the success of a school given the impact their leadership behaviors can have on teacher retention. This quantitative study investigated the connection between teachers' perceptions of instructional leaders and teacher retention. Furthermore, this study explored which factors had the most significant impact on teacher retention. Data was collected from teachers across 355 schools in West Tennessee. Results concluded that teachers' perceptions of the learning environment, instructional planning, professional development, evaluation, and leadership significantly correlated with teacher retention. However, the most significant factor impacting teacher retention included teacher perceptions of a positive learning environment. The findings from this study should provide policymakers, district office administrators, and instructional leaders with further data regarding the importance of leader behavior and ways to increase teacher retention.
