Contradicting the Stereotype: Case Studies of Success Despite Literacy Difficulties [with CD-ROM]
Waterhouse, Peter; Virgona, Crina
National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER)
It is well documented that individuals with poor verbal, reading and writing skills face disadvantages. However, many individuals with such difficulties lead successful lives. This project investigated the ways in which ten individuals have achieved success despite difficulties with literacy and learning. The life stories are presented in digital form on an accompanying CD-ROM, which is a useful resource for adult literacy practitioners. It is hoped that the stories and this report will encourage adult literacy educators and policy makers to rethink some of the assumptions and taken-for-granted-"truths" about individuals with literacy difficulties. [This publication was produced with funding provided by the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training. The CD-ROM included with the hard copy of this report that also carries the complete report on the research project, is not available from ERIC.]
