The purpose of the Year-Round Education (YRE) Evaluation Project is to provide formative evaluation information to Orange County (Florida) Public Schools decision-makers about the year-round education schedule piloted in three elementary schools. Employing YRE means reorganizing the traditional school calendar into shorter instructional sessions with intersessions and breaks distributed throughout the entire year. The district chose the 60/15 calendar, which divides the 180-day calendar into three Monday-Friday 12-week sessions separated by 3-week breaks. The district piloted a multitrack design at two schools and a single-track design at one school. The evaluation procedures included consultation with experts, parent and student surveys, teacher surveys and interviews, principal interviews, extensive literature reviews, achievement data collection, site visits and observations, and reviews of records. Results indicate that the transition to both multitrack and single-track YRE was successful. Normal school operations were observed in YRE schools, holidays and other events were celebrated, and student achievement was not negatively affected by the transition.
