This report summarizes conclusions and recommendations of an interdisciplinary committee which considered ways to improve the identification and auditory management of hearing-impaired children in Wisconsin schools. Major recommendations include: (1) the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) should license educational audiologists and encourage schools to employ audiologists by reimbursing districts for a portion of salary and fringe benefit costs; (2) the role and function of the educational audiologist should be clearly defined to include the design, coordination, supervision, and follow-up of regular hearing screening of all school children, and those students identified as hearing imparied should be included in multidisciplinary teams and individualized education program committees; (3) a coordinated and consistent statewide system should be developed for the reliable identification of childhood hearing impairment; and (4) an Educational Audiology Consultant position should be created within the Division for Handicapped Children and Pupil Services, hearing impairment eligibility criteria should be revised, and a joint DPI/Department of Health and Social Services committee on infant and early childhood hearing should be established. Appended are a summary of results of a 1989 survey of state education agencies, a model for school audiology services, and a memo addressing eligibility criteria.
