Science, Engineering and Ethics: State-of-the-Art and Future Directions. Report on a AAAS Workshop and Symposium February 1988.
Frankel, Mark S., Ed.
The field of ethics and values studies in science and technology has experienced an expansion since the 1970s including increased numbers of organizations, publications, research studies, workshops, and conferences. As a consequence, scholarly and public attention focus more frequently on ethics and values issues. In an effort to pause and reflect on the field's past achievements, its current status, and recommend future activities, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Office of Scientific Freedom and Responsibility convened this workshop at the 1988 AAAS annual meeting in Boston (Massachusetts). The workshop was organized into three working groups--two on research and one on education--and each prepared reports for presentation at the concluding session. This document contains a synopsis of each of nine papers presented at a two-session symposium on the same theme at the AAAS annual meeting; the reports of each of the working groups; formal comments from a number of the participants of the meeting; and a concise list of recommendations and conclusions from the workshop. Appendices include a list of the workshop participants, a list of goals and discussion topics, a discussion of the funding for ethics and values studies from two perspectives, and a statement of the role of the National Science Foundation concerning this field.
