The Library Information Desk: Needs Assessment and Service Alternatives. (Committee Report, Kent State University Library, Fall, 1986).
Gaylord, Mary; And Others
This report documents a study undertaken to determine the feasibility of and need for an information desk at the Kent State University (KSU) Library. Study methodology included gathering information through a review of the literature and a telephone survey of six academic libraries in Ohio comparable in size and holdings to KSU in order to develop a statistics sheet delineating questions that might be handled away from the reference desk; the statistics sheet was then used in a six-week survey of the types of questions received at KSU's reference desk. Based on a review of the survey data and the consideration of six alternatives available to the KSU library, the following options are recommended: (1) a temporary information desk to be established for 3-5 weeks at the beginning of the fall semester, or (2) a combined information/periodical desk. The use of a simplified statistics sheet to track reference activity is also suggested. The statistical results of the KSU reference desk survey are presented in 12 tables together with an analysis of each table; sample statistics sheets are included; and 6 references are provided. (KM)
