Teaching Young Children to Give Back
McGee, Christy D.
Parenting for High Potential, v1 n4 p12-13 Jan 2012
Young gifted children can become passionately interested in social justice. It makes sense that children who are astutely aware their own differences could and would become interested in the well-being of others. It seems that preschool programs have been slow to recognize the value of service-learning to their students, but Freeman and King (2001) found that once these teachers saw the value of service-learning projects for their students, they appreciate the potential. In this article, the author offers a few pointers for teachers that parents of a preschool child may want to share. Giving back to the community is an important value to instill in young children. By becoming active in serving others, parents have the power to set the example for their own children. (Contains 7 resources and 5 online resources.)
