Learning and Adaptation after Diagnosis: The Role of Parent Education
Reio, Thomas G., Jr.; Fornes, Sandra L.
New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, n132 p53-61 Win 2011
Raising a child has its frustrating moments; parenting a child with special needs multiplies those times, and parents often experience high levels of stress and frustration. In this article, the authors explore the challenges of parenting a child with special needs and the trials and errors of finding appropriate skills to assist in their children's development and education. The authors begin with a brief introduction of ecocultural theory, followed by a presentation of parent education as it relates to children with special needs, including a discussion of parent empowerment. They conclude by offering suggestions and strategies for parenting children with special needs.
