Camp provides an opportunity for a child to have fun, learn and grow in a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment. Tucked away in the picturesque Catoctin Mountain Park in Western Maryland, The League for People with Disabilities has run a summer camp program for over 70 years. Camp Greentop, the campground, is part of the national park, built as part of President Roosevelt's Work Project Administration to accommodate the needs of the campers attending The League's program. The Program started in 1937 with 12 children from Baltimore, Maryland who had post polio syndrome. Over the years, the demographics and needs of people with disabilities have changed; so has The League at Camp Greentop. It now provides camp experiences to over 450 children, teens and adults each summer, and offers several targeted sessions to ensure the greatest potential for each attendee. This article gives tips and strategies to finding the right program for one's child. It provides some questions one can ask the camp administrators when determining if the camp may be a good fit for one's child.
