The purpose of this article is to provide teachers, tutors and parents with an effective and enjoyable approach to practicing reading fluency, increasing comprehension and encouraging the joy of reading, based on the theories and methods of Sally L. Smith. This method can be applied and adapted to individual student's needs. Sally Smith, the Founder of The Lab School of Washington, understood that children with learning disabilities are highly effective learners when they are taught in a manner that suits their learning styles. This article presents a teaching unit that introduces and applies an actor's role-reading approach. Fluency exercises are presented which are similar to those an actor practices when in training. Grouped in categories, the exercises included can be utilized with students in one-on-one, small group or large classroom settings. The second unit applies the role-reading/actor's approach to a trade book. The author found mystery books to be extremely enticing to students; therefore, the application of the approach is presented using a mystery unit.
