Children's Health: Managing ADHD during the School Year
Lopez, Frank A.
Exceptional Parent, v37 n10 p46 Oct 2007
The school year can be an especially troublesome time for the 4.4 million U.S. children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as their inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive behavior hampers their ability to do well and succeed in the classroom. In order to ensure children perform at their best level during the school year, it is important for parents of children with ADHD to first understand their child's condition. Before the beginning of the school year, a routine for the child should be set up so the entire family may adjust to a new schedule. It is also important that parents schedule a meeting with their child's teachers, counselors, and physician to address the needs for their child's case before the school year begins. Once parents have addressed their child's ADHD with teachers, they should request to form a plan with the teachers to monitor the child's progress.
