Sleep and School Functioning: Information for Families and Educators
Communique, v46 n2 p34-35 Oct 2017
Sleep--not getting enough or not getting good sleep--can greatly affect students' cognitive, academic, behavioral, emotional, and social functioning. Sleep issues are relatively common, occurring in as many as 25% of children and are more prevalent in those with certain medical conditions (pain, asthma, traumatic brain injury) or psychiatric disorders (ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, depression, anxiety). This handout offers sleep and school functioning information for families and educators. Information on the following topics are presented: (1) The importance of sleep; (2) Sleep requirements and sleep habits; (3) What parents can do; and (4) What school systems can do.
