Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Revised
Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities
There are an estimated 1.5 to 2.5 million children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the United States. These children make up about 3-5 percent of a school's student population. Boys are diagnosed almost ten times more often than girls. Girls tend to be more inattentive and their symptoms are dismissed as those of a day dreamer. Although symptoms change with age, research studies reaffirm that children do not "outgrow" their ADHD. This document provide information on diagnostic features of ADHD, ADHD myths, how to secure special education or educational accommodations, a step by step walk through the special education process, behavior interventions/modifications, parenting a child with ADHD, executive function deficits, suggested strategies for success in school, and medication and treatment of ADHD.
