The Survival Guide for Parents of Gifted Kids: How To Understand, Live with, and Stick up for Your Gifted Child. Revised & Updated Edition.
Walker, Sally Yahnke
Noting the unique skills required of parents with gifted/talented children, this book serves as a "portable support service" for parents who are faced with the overwhelming task of understanding and nurturing their gifted children. The guide describes the history and current models of gifted education, characteristics and needs of gifted children, and problems that may arise. The text includes many checklists and anecdotes, and each chapter is followed by a list of recommended resources for parents. Chapter 1 is a historical summary of the treatment of gifted children in America. Chapter 2 reviews various definitions and ways of identifying giftedness, and notes groups of children whose giftedness is prone to being overlooked. Chapter 3 addresses challenges of living with gifted children and offers advice for parents on endless questions, the gap between a child's intellectual and emotional ages, super sensitivity, and integrating physical activity and relaxation into a child's life. Chapter 4 deals with problems that may arise, particularly overexcitability and perfectionism, and includes a list of ten tip-offs to trouble, followed by ways to help. Chapter 5 describes various kinds of school programs and options for parents who are dissatisfied with the school situation. The final chapter is on advocacy, from the classroom to the state level. The guidebook concludes by answering a list of 15 questions parents ask and providing more resources for parents as well as a bibliography for each chapter. (KK)
