Parent's Guide to the Internet.
Lee, Paulette
This booklet provides parents with basic information about how to use the computer to find information and communicate with others. It describes what is needed to get started on the Internet and points to some of the many resources available online for parents and children. The book discusses: a brief definition of the Internet, including what the Internet has in common with other forms of communication; benefits of using the Internet; getting started on the Internet, including free facilities in the community, understanding the hardware and software basics, options for accessing the Internet, and considerations to keep in mind when buying a computer to access the Internet; tips on Internet basics, including browsing on the World Wide Web, saving information from the Internet, and electronic communication; tips for ensuring that children have safe, productive, and enjoyable experiences on the Internet; suggestions for helping children develop Internet skills; and supporting school use of technology. A final section offers a sampling of "family friendly" Internet sites available to parents and children. A glossary of computer-related terms is also provided. (AEF)
