This document provides answers to frequently asked questions about special education services provided in Florida's public schools for children and adults with disabilities, and is based on a 1999 conference held by the Florida Department of Education and other agencies for families and individuals with disabilities. The 30 questions and answers are organized under the following categories: (1) federal/state requirements; (2) assistive technology; (3) role of the Florida Department of Education; (4) opportunity scholarships; (5) programs in the Department of Juvenile Justice facilities; (6) programs for adults with disabilities; and (7) teacher qualification. Three appendices include descriptions of Exceptional Student Education parent services, a summary of procedural safeguards for students with disabilities, and a summary of procedural safeguards for students who are gifted.
