Making the Grade: A Guide to School Drug Prevention Programs. Preventing Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use. Updated and Expanded.
Drug Strategies, Washington, DC.
This revision of the 1996 publication is a tool for identifying promising drug prevention programs. This booklet is designed to help teachers, school principals, and concerned citizens determine how to spend scarce prevention dollars. Many parents assume that school prevention programs will protect their children from drugs; the information provided in this booklet helps parents judge for themselves the adequacy of school-based prevention programs. The programs evaluated are divided into four categories: comprehensive health curricula; K-12 drug prevention curricula; elementary and middle school drug prevention curricula; and middle and high school drug prevention curricula. Each category provides program descriptions that include contact information and appropriate grade level. These descriptions are followed by three charts that provide general information including year created, year revised, ease of implementation, teacher training; and evaluation of awareness and resistance skills and personal and social skills training. Also included is a chart that provides information on evaluation studies that have been discussed in peer-reviewed journals. (Contains 15 references.) (MKA)
