This guide was written to provide elementary school teachers, parents and other caregivers of children up to the age of 10 with practical suggestions for creating a supportive, bias-free learning environment in the classroom or at home. The main focus of the book is on ethnic differences. Chapter 1 discusses why it is important to help children recognize, understand, and accept differences in themselves and others. Chapter 2 includes suggestions for preparing to implement a bias-free environment and discusses getting to know the children one works with and their families, understanding one's community, and anticipating cultural issues that might arise when talking about specific subjects. Chapter 3 pays careful attention to creating a physical environment where children can feel safe and at home. Chapter 4 discusses the more abstract elements of establishing a bias-free learning environment, including how to ensure an atmosphere of caring and respect, increase children's self-esteem through pride in themselves and their ethnicity and culture, and help them develop and practice critical thinking skills.
